Energy Savings Difference: Single Pane VS Double Pane Windows

You may have heard at some point that double pane windows are better than single pane. The main reason for being better is because of the energy efficiency of double pane and triple pane windows. At an inspection I had the right set up at a home to test and prove this on two different windows using my thermal camera which is a free service I include with every home inspection.

The windows were both on the same side of the house, tested on the same day and time. Exterior temperatures were between 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit and cloudy.

This first thermal image is of an old metal single pane window. The second image is of a newer vinyl double pane window. The warmest spot on the old single pane window was 54 degrees and the warmest spot on the newer double pane window was 67 degrees. The coldest spot on the older single pane window was 51 degrees and the coldest spot on the newer double pane window was 65 degrees.
